![]() My final step is to change the background and then do a Web search. When added, drag the text to the position you want it and pinch your fingers to resize. Easily, change the font, text background and colour using the options panel. Next you can tap on the screen and then choose to add some text to create a title. Once added, it’s simple to move, rotate or resize using your fingers. You can see the App allows you to choose from adding text, photos, Web content, collected media or backgrounds.įirstly, you can add an image from your gallery (I saved a good image from a website beforehand). I will use the topic Volcanoes as an example.īelow is the blank poster. I’m going to show you ‘Freestyle’ so you know how to use all the features. ‘Freestyle’ is a blank page where you can start from scratch. ‘Templates’ will help you make a whole range of projects from phone case covers to newspapers. ‘Grids’ will allow you to make a simple collage from your gallery photos. When you open the App, you will reach this page: Like many Apps nowadays, it is very straightforward to use. Here is a PicCollage a student of mine created as part of their Thai history project: It is available on the App Store and Google Play. The following pictures are proposals to improve PicCollage’s learnability.PicCollage is a great app which allows you to create visually effective posters. The only complain I would make about this app is that its ‘My Collages’ page has poor learnability and affordances, as some elements of that page are not very intuitive for a first time user, (having to tap on a collage to edit, the share icon). When editing, the editing bar was always present and clear to the user, plus, it encouraged the user to explore their different editing features. When looking around the app, you always had a navigation bar that led you to exactly the main function of the app: making a collage. This is due to the affordances throughout its interface, and the fact that most (if not all) icons provided a label of what they were. I believe PicCollage provides great learnability for the users, providing them with an app that is easy and to the point. The ‘Done’ button is clear on the top right side, as all as the ‘check’ symbols that symbolize being done with an editing feature. I think it was a nice addition to incorporate an arrow in the editor bar, in order to show the user that there are more features they may want to explore. There are already some universal symbols in the editor page such as the undo and redo arrows on the top of the page. The editor is very straightforward and easy to navigate, with icons that get bolder once selected, and easy to recognize symbols. The collage maker has both icons and captions for the editing options, aiding its learnability and memorability. Because the ‘Store’ is to the right in the navigation bar, the screen slides to the right when you tap it, and to go back it is intuitive to slide to the left or click the arrow pointing left, making it easy for users to learn. The arrows are not in the same place, but instead take the right or left side according to their place in the original homepage. The arrows on the top right/left are also significant affordances when navigating through the app. ![]() The clutter because of the graphics seems to have been added for the app to generate more money. Though the display is a bit crowded because of the amount of graphics, you are able to search for stickers by category and narrow down your search. You have the option to search for stickers or backgrounds, and to see which ones you have already purchased. The ‘Store’ page also does a good job at easily showing the user what they are looking at. The ‘My Collages’ page is very straightforward, and shows the ‘plus’ button again, which intuitively will make a user add a picture and start a new collage. Tapping on these buttons will instantly take you to their page. The tabs on each side may not have the most recognizable icons, but they do have names underneath, aiding for learnability and memorability. This is important for efficiency, and demonstrates that PicCollage’s learnability is easy for new users, as well as optimal for users already familiar with photo editors. In photo editing apps, the ‘plus’ sign indicates ‘add picture’, this also makes it an affordance in the app. In the navigation bar, the ‘plus’ sign is bigger and in a brighter color than the other tabs. The app does a good job at highlighting the main function of the app, which is to make collages. The first aspect I will focus on is PicCollage’s navigation bar at the bottom of the page. ![]()
